Years 3 and 4 pupils at Asquith Primary School, Mansfield, have grown peas, beans, cabbage and rhubarb with help from Dobbies Garden Centre, Chesterfield, and the school’s office manager, Sandra Towson, (right), and teacher Mark Bellamy, (left), pictured with some of the members of a weekly gardening club he runs.
The school has appealed for volunteers to help with its gardening and donations of seeds or plants.
The school is hoping to secure a bloom award again this year. Last year it won a silver gilt.
Sandra said: “Dobbies’s support has provided the front of our school with a focus on vegetables this year. I have encouraged children to help me with watering and weeding during lunchtimes and breaks as well as the gardening club. We have all really enjoyed it. We have set our sights on achieving an In Bloom Gold this year.”
Head Clare Harding said: “As a school we focus on the community. By working with partners and businesses we are creating links and opportunities for the children to learn more about the world around them and helping them put our school ethos into practice.
“Taking responsibility for growing plants and working in harmony with others is part of everyday life and can make our lives more fulfilled.”
