Great War project grants chance

Groups planning events from February to July to help mark the Great War can apply for funding from Nottinghamshire County Council.

The sixth round of awards from its Community Commemoration Fund is under way and applications close on 13th January 2017.

The latest successful applicants to receive £300 towards their events included Asquith Primary School, Mansfield, supported by Coun Steve Garner, which will see children take part in a history project and develop a memorial garden.

St Mary’s bell ringers in Blidworth, supported by Coun Yvonne Woodhead, will buy a peal board where the details of 54 local men will be recorded. At an appropriate date the bells will peal to signify the passing of each of those killed in action.

Sutton Youth Radio, supported by Coun David Kirkham, has arranged five workshops in secondary schools that look at communication methods used at the outbreak of the Great War and how they compare today. Students will describe their experiences to an estimated 25,000 listeners.

Deputy leader of the council Coun Joyce Bosnjak said: “The Commemoration Fund hopes to support local groups to help bring the history of the 1914–18 war to life and show how the war impacted on their local communities.”

Among the activities eligible for funding are theatre productions; educational visits to a UK-based exhibition, museum or memorial; film shows/concerts; re-enactments; art exhibitions; war memorial research and restoration; talks and demonstrations; and poetry competitions.

Groups can apply for funding by downloading an application form at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/whats-on/heritage/community-commemoration-fund or calling 0300 500 8080.
