Grants to help people stay warm this winter

Posted onPosted on 10th Dec

Homeowners on a low income and suffering from a long-term health problem could qualify for a grant from Mansfield District Council to help reduce their energy bills?

The Warm Homes on Prescription project aims to help residents suffering from cold-sensitive health conditions to achieve affordable warmth.

To qualify, applicants must also be a home owner, have less than £16,000 in savings and have a gross annual household income of no more than £21,000, excluding housing costs and disability benefits.

The grants can cover items such as boiler repairs or replacement boilers but this cannot be offered as an emergency service, so residents are advised not to wait for their boiler to stop working before applying.

It could also be used to install new heating controls, such as thermostatic controls on radiators.

Coun Marion Bradshaw, portfolio holder for communities, housing and wellbeing, said: “It is really important for people with certain long term health problems, such as respiratory, circulatory and mobility conditions, to stay warm to avoid a deterioration in their health.

“For people on a low income, turning down the heating or even turning it off can be a real temptation. This is where this scheme may be able to help.”
