Getting on their bikes to save lives

Fundraisers are planning a sponsored spin ride to raise money for a potentially life-saving defibrillator for Mansfield.

It is being organised by Ruby Straw, of Sutton, and her fiance Dominic Witton after Ruby’s father’s life was saved by a defibrillator.

Ruby and family and friends will undertake a tag spin at PureGym, Mansfield, on Saturday, 23rd April. They will aim to cover the distance from London to Paris and will also be running two 45-minute spin classes throughout their journey.

They hope they can raise enough money for a defibrillator to be installed in a public place, possibly the Four Seasons Centre, Mansfield, to help save lives.

Ruby said her father – Daryl – suffered a cardiac arrest in August while at home.

“Luckily my mum, Samantha Miles, woke and reacted quickly, ringing the ambulance and preforming CPR until the paramedics reached my dad,” she said.

“When they got to him, he wasn’t breathing and his heart was in an irregular rhythm. They shocked him once with a defibrillator, put him in an induced coma and took him to King’s Mill Hospital.

“He then spent three weeks in City Hospital’s Critical Care Unit, Nottingham, and then time on the Acute Cardiac Ward.

“My dad has managed to make an amazing recovery and is currently attending cardiac rehab classes at King’s Mill. But the chance of survival after suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is 8.6%. When someone has a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces their chances of survival by seven to 10%.

“Without my mum being able to perform CPR, our story would have been very different, but I have seen how defibrillators can save a life.

“If this event can save just one life, it will definitely be worth it.”

The bike riders will be Ruby, Dominic, Samantha, Mikaila Jabanda and Holly Elliot.
