Fundraising for Dementia UK in memory of her dad

Posted onPosted on 30th Jun

A caring daughter wants to raise money for Dementia UK in memory of her late father.

Ken Saxton, who was once head caretaker at the former Rufford School in Edwinstowe, died two years ago after fighting Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Now his daughter, Sharon Weston, is organising an 80’s Night to raise money for the charity to help others as a tribute to her father.

It is being organised together with Julie English, manager at South Forest Leisure Complex, Edwinstowe, where the event will be held on Saturday, 2nd September.

Sharon said: “Fancy dress is compulsory and there will be prizes for the best ones.

“If any local companies would like to help we are looking for prizes for the best three in fancy dress.

“We are also appealing for raffle prizes, so if there are any local companies that would like to donate a prize that would be fantastic.

“Let’s raise as much as we can for this charity and have fun doing so.”

Explaining why they had decided to hold the fundraiser, Sharon, who was brought up in Edwinstowe and now lives in Boughton, said: “My dad had Parkinson’s and dementia, and he passed away two years ago.

“I basically wanted to do something for the Dementia UK charity to help others.

“Julie, the manager at South Forest, is a family friend. My dad was her boss years ago when he was head caretaker at the old Rufford School.

“So I approached her to see if this was something she could help me with and she jumped on board.

“She thought it was a fantastic idea and so we got our heads together to plan this amazing night.

“Julie got her book out looking for a date and the book opened up on 2nd September. My dad’s birthday was the 1st and mine is the 3rd, so it was like fate!”

Sharon said her family, including her mum, Cynthia Saxton, who sadly died from breast cancer, have been regulars at South Forest for many years. She held her wedding reception there and recently her stepson was married at South Forest.

Tickets for the 80’s Night on 2nd September cost £10 and can be bought from the South Forest reception or call the venue on 01623 823866 for further information.

Any companies or people wanting to donate raffle or fancy dress competition prizes can also contact South Forest.
