Freshers fun and friends

A new academic year has brought new students to West Nottinghamshire College this week and things have kicked off with the annual freshers’ fair.

Featuring at three campuses including Derby Road, the Construction and Logistics Skills Academy and the Engineering Innovation Centre, the freshers’ fair offers students a number of avenues of support during their first week at college.

Visiting the freshers’ fair this week were organisations including New Leaf smoking cessation service, Health Watchdog Nottinghamshire, Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Let’s Talk wellbeing service and Sexions – the confidential sexual health advice people.

As well as there being lots of advice from external organisations, freshers were able to speak to college staff from a range of departments including the Students’ Union, the health and welfare team, careers and employability and the sports team.

Health and welfare advisor at the college Mark Cantrill said: “This week’s activities are aimed at ensuring our new students feel both welcomed and supported in the college environment.

“We’re not just here to encourage learning but we’re also available to guide young people through any issues they may face as
individuals.

“It’s a good opportunity to show students all of the other fun activities they can get involved in at the college whether this is through the Students’ Union or taking up a volunteering or sporting activity.”
