Four schools enjoy five-day holiday club

Asquith Primary School used a National Lottery community grant to run a holiday club for the local community.

Pupils from four primary schools — Berry Hill, Mansfield Primary Academy and Abbey also took part — in Mansfield came together for the first five days of the holidays to enjoy sports, crafts and food.

Asquith had asked schools if families would be interested in joining them for a holiday club. They were also helped by a small grant from Greggs.

School staff planned the Club activities, which involved children making their own lunch each day and sitting down together as a whole group to eat.

The grant covered the costs of additional support from Express Coaching, which provided a qualified sports coach each day to run games and activities.

On the first day the coach brought wheelchairs for children to have a go at wheelchair basketball.

There was craft making activities such as decorating a bag, making dream catchers, masks and colouring, plus construction toys, a reading tent and gardening.

Children were encouraged to help with watering the many plants growing at Asquith and each child potted up a bell pepper plant to take home.

The week culminated with a summer disco and a fish, chips and ice cream lunch. Chip lunches were provided by Papa’s Chip Shop on Ravensdale Road, which offered a discounted price.

Sumara Anbar, teaching assistant at Asquith and holiday club lead, said: “We have worked hard to offer a range of activities that would appeal to many children. They all enjoyed themselves and had great fun as well as making new friends.”

Clare Harding, Asquith head, said: “It was a real bonus to be given the grant to enable us to run a holiday club this year. It worked really well; we were able to offer places to children from schools in our local area and schools we work in partnership with.”
