Five visions of Welbeck

Posted onPosted on 15th Mar

A series of exhibitions will explore different aspects of the historic Welbeck estate from May to December.

One will feature the Victorian 5th Duke of Portland, who shaped the architecture of Welbeck and famously built a network of tunnels beneath the estate.

The 5th Duke of Portland – Tunnel Vision exhibition, from 14th May until the end of the year, goes beyond his architecture to reveal his life, lost love, and impressive art collection.

Also showing is an exhibition from two artists based in North Nottinghamshire – ceramicist Kyra Cane and sculptor Michelle Reader — from 14th May to 24th July.

Michelle will be showing life-size animal sculptures made from recycled materials. The horses depict a prehistoric wild horse and a modern day racehorse, the latter inspired by works from the Portland collection depicting horses owned by the Duke of Portland.

They will be sited in the Courtyard outside the gallery, and mark the start of a new art trail to Creswell Crags.
Kyra’s exhibition charts a project with international interiors brand Villa Nova, which has translated her one-of-a-kind ceramics into a range of interiors products.

Contemporary artist Sofia Mitsola is creating a new display that combines and contrasts her own work with the miniature portraits on show in the Portland Collection museum. House Of Aquamarina runs from 14th May until the end of the year.
