First cost of living roadshow at Mansfield Museum

Posted onPosted on 12th Oct

People struggling with rising bills and energy costs are being encouraged to attend Mansfield District Council’s first Cost of Living Roadshow tomorrow (13 October).

The event at Mansfield Museum from 5pm to 7pm will see council officers and other agencies signposting residents to where they can access support and advice.

Partners on hand include the Department for Work and Pensions, Nottinghamshire County Council, Citizens Advice, Direct Help and Advice and Family Action.

It will be the first of series of council-run roadshows around the district. The others lined up are:

•  Warsop Methodist Church – Tuesday 1 November, 1pm to 3pm

•  Oak Tree Leisure Centre – Thursday 3 November, 5pm to 7pm

•  Stacey Road Community Centre – Monday 7 November, 5pm to 7pm

•  Trowell Court Community Centre – Tuesday 8 November, 1pm to 3pm.

Mayor Andy Abrahams said: “We know many people are facing a difficult time at the moment and we want to make sure they have access to whatever support is out there as soon as possible.

“There is help out there but it can be confusing about where to start getting it. These roadshows will help people who are needing support on to the right path.

“We know from the way Mansfield responded during the pandemic that people in this district are there for each other in times of need.

“Much of the support during this cost of living crisis will be community based and we will be doing our best to let people know about where to go for help right now before they run the risk of rising debts.”

The roadshows follow on from a Cost of Living Summit last week (7 October) that brought together key partners across the district and after the authority officially declared a cost of living emergency during its meeting of the Full Council last month (20 September).

As well as the roadshows, the summit, led by Mayor Andy, also discussed a proposed ‘Warm Rooms’ scheme in the district.

This will comprise a network of warm spaces open to people struggling to heat their homes over the colder months.

They will run with the support of council partners including, Mansfield Museum, Oak Tree Leisure Centre and a range of community and voluntary organisations.

More details of opening times for each venue and how the scheme will work will be announced in the coming weeks.
