Farewells and new faces at charity promoting Sherwood Forest

Posted onPosted on 22nd Jan

A charity that works with volunteers on tree planting, heathland restoration, and community engagement projects is saying farewell to two leaders — and welcoming new faces.

The Sherwood Forest Trust’s chief executive Dr Patrick Candler, who is retiring after 11 years, has been instrumental in advancing the charity’s mission to preserve and celebrate the heritage of the famous forest.

He has been at the heart of many achievements, from overseeing the annual Woodland Festival to bringing the long-awaited Sherwood Seedbank — a community tree nursery based in Sherwood Pines — to life.

Patrick was also a driving force behind celebrating the heritage of Sherwood Forest through events like the Spirit of Wartime Sherwood and the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Major Hayman Rooke.

“I have had 11 wonderful years at the trust, and it has been a real privilege to work with excellent staff and achieve some brilliant projects in this time.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years.”

Stepping into the role of chief executive is Helen Sullivan, who has a strong background in the charity sector, community, and wellbeing, having previously been chief executive of Breathworks, and chief operating officer at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare.

“This charity has already made a significant impact through its work and I am eager to build on this legacy,” she said. “Having visited Sherwood Forest often during my childhood, I’ve always felt a deep connection to this special place.”

Andy Jeffcutt — who has been appointed the new chair of trustees, taking over from Andy Statham — added: “I first visited Sherwood as a child and was fascinated by the stories of Robin Hood. The magic of the forest has remained.”

The Sherwood Forest Trust is looking for a conservation manager to lead its efforts in preserving and protecting the heart of Sherwood Forest, and a community conservation officer to engage local communities to help care for the legendary woodland.
