A Mansfield primary school has partnered with a university for an initiative to encourage pupils and their grown-ups to read more at home.
Parents, pupils and staff gathered at Oak Tree Primary School to celebrate a love of reading and all things books as well as launch the partnership with Luke Parmenter, widening access and outreach manager at Nottingham Trent University.
As part of the event, some volunteer parents are being trained as reading champions and talked about the project, while staff demonstrated what good reading looks like in and around the school.
“We were delighted with the turn out,” said head teacher Kate Watson.
“We are so passionate at Oak Tree School about reading and it was great to hold an event that really embeds what we are trying to achieve in the community. We are hoping this is the first of many reading events.”
As part of the partnership with Nottinghamshire Trent University, every pupil was invited to choose a new book, donated by the National Literacy Trust, to take home and keep.
Teachers showed how reading is taught at Oak Tree, while school councillors and pupil librarians showcased work happening there.
