Elderly couple reunited after eight months apart

Posted onPosted on 19th Apr

The story of how an elderly Mansfield couple kept apart because of coronavirus restrictions were eventually reunited eight months later in April has made headlines across the country.

A heartwarming video captured the moment that Gordon and Mary Davis, both 89, met for the first time since last September.

The couple were separated when Gordon fell ill and had to enter a care home.

His wife was unable to visit him because of coronavirus restrictions and then in February Mary moved into Baily House care home on Botany Avenue, Mansfield, for respite care.

Staff at the home and others then worked hard to find a room in the home for Gordon to move into — and the big day came in April, which was a surprise to the couple.

Mary cast aside her walking frame to reach her husband in their first hug, which captured the hearts of millions in a video released by the care home on Facebook.

Mary said: “When Gordon first had to go into a home I cried so much. I then needed some respite care myself and he was able to join me.

“Seeing him again was wonderful and now we can always be together in our new home.”

Baily House shared the reunion on Facebook, saying: “Our lovely Mary has had a real surprise.

“Her beloved husband, Gordon, has come to live here at Baily House with her.”

Morrisons in Mansfield were so moved by Mary and Gordon’s video that they delivered them their very own afternoon tea and bouquet of flowers.

The store did not forget other residents and staff and also took doughnuts, daffodils and gardening items for them to enjoy.

Baily House has an Amazon wishlist for people and businesses wanting to donate to help them care for their residents.
