A former NHS nurse for more than 30 years has completed her dream of opening a cafe with a vintage tearoom vibe.
Amy Clements, the owner of PoFfles on Station Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, originally swapped her nursing role for selling homemade food at events from her converted 1973 caravan as PoFfles Coffee and Cake Emporium.
Now her long-held tearoom dream has been turned into a reality, with the help of her fiancé, Tony Johncock — and in a double celebration the couple will get married later this year.
Amy said after her opening weekend: “We’ve had a lot of questions about why we are called PoFfles.
“Well, we met on a dating site, Plenty of Fish (PoF), and our caravan used to sell waffles. But when we became new owners of the shop, PoFfles was born.
“If you Google the word, it means a small piece of land, so come and visit us soon at our small piece of land — 19 Station Street, Mansfield Woodhouse.
“We met some truly wonderful people over the opening weekend and we want to bring back that vintage tearoom vibe with our small, local family-run business.”
One of Amy’s first ideas at the cafe has been to sign up to a scheme that aims to bring people together.
PoFfles has joined the Chatty Cafe Scheme and wants to offer a Chatter & Natter, but needs volunteers to help host the sessions on Fridays, from 9.30am to 11am.
Amy added: “It’s a simple concept, where members of the public are invited to sit at the table, simply to chat.
“Loneliness is a silent killer and this is a great way that we can work with the community to offer a table in our cafe to bring people together and tackle loneliness at the same time. Do you enjoy speaking to new people? Could you spare one or two hours a week to help promote and host the table and encourage people of all ages to come and talk together?
“If so, please apply at https://thechattycafescheme.co.uk/venue/poffles
“I’d love to get a rota established on this, based upon everyone’s availability.”
