Dorothy’s generous donation

When generous Mansfield resident Dorothy Tiplady turned 90, she had double cause to celebrate.

In the late 1990s, Dorothy was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma brain tumour — a relatively rare tumour that grows in the inner ear, affecting hearing, balance and facial function — and underwent intracranial surgery it have it removed.

So as she pondered her milestone birthday, Dorothy decided to raise funds for the British Acoustic Neuroma Association (BANA) instead of receiving gifts.

A birthday party (above) was held at Blidworth Miners’ Welfare Social Centre for more than 70 family and friends, including her son, Mark, and daughter, Pauline.

The party raised more than £900, including Gift Aid, for BANA charity, which provides support and information for people with the condition.

BANA was launched in Mansfield and is now based in Chesterfield.
