Designs on future jobs!

Posted onPosted on 16th Mar

Skegby Junior Academy was among Greenwood Academies Trust primaries that took part in National Careers Week.

Years 3 to 6 pupils at the academies learned about six growth sectors — creative, digital, agrifood, engineering, construction, and logistics — and had presentations from professionals in these fields.

They also learned about ‘hidden’ jobs, or those that are unexpected, including from a musician in the Scots Guard.

Youngsters took part in a ‘jobs of the future’ competition, sponsored by the DHL UK Foundation.

They were asked to reflect on how technology has influenced lives and consider jobs that didn’t exist 15 years ago. Then they had to design and present a job they think could exist 15 years from now and the skills needed to do this job successfully.

Rachael Graney, careers lead at Skegby Junior Academy, said: “We aim to give all our pupils every opportunity to build transferable skills, to know all the career choices open to them, and to be able to ask questions and raise interest in those careers, understanding the pathways to get there.

Wayne Norrie, chief executive at the trust, said: “Everything we do across our primary academies is about introducing pupils to the exciting opportunities available to them, but in a way that also challenges stereotypes and helps broaden and raise aspirations.

“We look forward to the inspiration this week brings for all of our pupils and know that together with the support of our staff, parents, and wider school community we can nurture our young people and equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to go on to fulfil their potential in whatever profession they choose.”
