Cricket club tributes to Blidworth stalwart

Several tributes were paid to local cricket legend Ritchie Gibbons during August as Blidworth Colliery Welfare CC remembered their former chairman, groundsman, and distinguished player.

Ritchie, who died suddenly in June, left an indelible mark on the club, said first XI captain Kyle Kirkland.

He was an integral part of the club for more than 40 years.

A T20 memorial matchday raised money in his memory, featuring a children’s game, women’s game, and men’s game. It celebrated Ritchie’s life and contributions to the club.

Earlier in the month, the day after Ritchie’s funeral, the club scored a season-best 429 for six as “his dedication and love for the game were honoured in a manner befitting his legacy”.

The high score was compiled thanks to a double hundred from overseas player Athelbert ‘Hugo’ Brathwaite and a Fida Hussain century.

Athelbert, from Barbados, was living with Ritchie and his partner, Lucy, for the summer while playing in the English cricket season.

He dedicated his monumental innings of 216 not out, made off 144 balls, to Ritchie.

Kyle said: “This was a very special day for Hugo, paying tribute to the man who opened his home and heart to him.”

Captain for the day Fida hit a 67-run 130 as Blidworth beat Waleswood Sports by 243 runs.

Blidworth 2nds also won, beating Whitwell 2nds by three wickets.

Kyle said: “Ritchie was the heart and soul of our club. His contributions on and off the field were immense.

“The performances by both our teams were a testament to the inspiration he provided to all of us. This was more than just cricket; it was a celebration of Ritchie’s life and legacy.”

Kyle said Ritchie’s passion for cricket and dedication to mentoring the next generation of players was unparalleled. His tireless efforts and meticulous care transformed the ground into one of the finest cricket pitches in Nottinghamshire.
