Creating a safe haven for swans

Posted onPosted on 2nd Mar

A special island for wildlife has been installed at a popular pond in Sutton.

Following concerns for wildlife at Calladine Pond on the Ashfields estate, the Ashfield District Council has followed guidance from the Wildlife Trust to install an island in the water.

It was reported that swans were attacked and killed by dogs around the banks of the pond in 2019.

Made from reclaimed items in just a few hours, it is hoped the island will now act as a safe area for nesting and protection.

It is part of the souncil’s commitment to wildlife and follows the installation of bee and butterfly boxes, flower beds for pollinators, and the authority’s recent participation in a national bird watching event.

Council leader Coun Jason Zadrozny said “I received numerous reports from local residents who were concerned for the safety of wildlife following the attacks last year. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to listen and respond with this solution.

“The team has shown great ingenuity and by using reclaimed materials, such as drain pipes and plastic bottles, we have been able to keep the cost of the project to a minimum. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the pond and I hope wildlife will make good use of the island soon.

“Over the next 12 months we will look to identify other areas that could benefit from similar schemes. We are committed to finding innovative and creative ways to enhance the district’s biodiversity.”
