Sutton-based ATTFE College, which also has campuses in Ollerton and at Portland College, brought its Platinum Jubilee celebrations to the community — with 10,000 people getting involved in a cream tea.
The college said: “An education focus is life in modern Britain and it felt fitting to explore old traditions, such as democracy and cream scones.
“Initially it was hoped that the event would break the Guinness World Record for cream teas.
“However, we established it would cost ATTFE College at least £18,000 to undertake that quest with Guinness, which was too much for a community-facing organisation where every penny gets pushed to the frontline.
“It was a magnificent occasion with lots of smiles; red, white and blue; and debate around whether it is jam or cream first!”
Around 10,000 local primary school, secondary school, and college students took part, together with college stakeholders and partners, and day centre and care home residents.
Everyone received a cream scone, jam, cream, flag, crown, and activity book.
The college thanked those who supported the event, including B Taylor and Sons Transport, Alfreton Hall, and Ashfield Police (Reacher Team and Beat Team).
