Couple renew wedding vows live on air — and boost three charities

Posted onPosted on 26th Oct

For most couples celebrating 40 years of marriage the milestone would containing the precious gem — but not Tony and Yvette Price-Mear.

The Mansfield Woodhouse couple, who have renewed their vows every 10 years since they were married in 1981, decided to do something a little different.

The 59-year-olds, of Burnt Oaks Close, renewed their vows live on Mansfield 103.2 during Katie Trinder’s Sunday Brunch radio show.

Not only that, they also raised hundreds of pounds for the Carers Trust, 4th Mansfield Woodhouse Scouts and Radio Mansfield 103.2’s King’s Mill Hospital’s Toy Appeal.

Yvette said: “On the day we got married, as Tony and I left St Edmund’s Church we looked at each other and decided that because it was such a wonderful experience, we would renew our vows every 10 years —and that’s what we’ve done.

“We wanted our 40th anniversary to be bigger and better than ever and we had planned to do it in church with 20 bridesmaids, two pageboys and a couple of hundred guests, but sadly because of Covid that was not possible.

“So I approached Katie and Mansfield 103.2. I know that the radio station are old romantics and love to do something a bit different.

“We also thought we could use the opportunity to raise money for the charities.”

Katie, who has worked at Mansfield 103.2 since it launched in 1999, qualified as a celebrant with the Academy of Professional Celebrants last year and conducted the service during the live outside broadcast from Forest Town Arena — in front of 150 family and friends.

Guests were asked to buy raffle tickets and have a game of bingo to raise funds for the three causes instead of buying the couple gifts.

“It was phenomenally successful,”added Yvette. “I already had £600 donated from people prior to the event and during the afternoon we raised a further £652, making a total of £1,252 — so each charity received £417.33.”

The anniversary event was a community effort — Phil and Vicki Pogmore, of 4th Mansfield Woodhouse Scouts, provided hot roast pork cobs for guests; Hetty’s supplied Yvette’s outfit from its charity sale of bridal outfits; and flowers were given to by the Carers Trust.

And when Yvette’s hair and make-up lady became ill, Katy Pepper and Charlotte Mallatrat opened up Chatty’s hair salon in Mansfield Woodhouse on a Sunday morning to save the day.

“We had 15 beautiful bridesmaids and one handsome pageboy after a public appeal and we were entertained by Max Restaino, a local lad made good who supported Peter Andre on his last tour,” said Yvette.

“My son, Deev, and son-in-law, Lewis Sprowell, amused everyone by being our ‘dainty’ flower girls.

“I knew it would be lovely (because we’ve done it three time previously) but because of Covid we haven’t all been together as a family since lockdown. I cried most of the day really.”

Katie added: “It was an absolute honour to be asked to conduct Tony and Yvette’s vow renewal, it bought together two careers that I love!

“It was definitely a radio first for Mansfield 103.2 and for me. We’ve never done a vow renewal live on air and I’ve certainly never presented a show whilst conducting a ceremony,  but it was something really special.”

Managing editor for Mansfield 103.2, Ian Watkins, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to be involved in Yvette and Tony’s celebrations.

“We are one of very few independent radio stations left in the UK and it means that we have the freedom to be able to be involved in special moments in our listeners’ lives.

“Plus, I think in 22 years we’ve never had an on-air wedding and the fact it helped to raise funds for our King’s Mill Toy Appeal was the cherry on top of the cake.”
