Mansfield District Council has welcomed the opportunity to help Syrian refugees fleeing the war-torn country.

The council has responded to a request from the Home Office and offered its support, subject to further discussions taking place with the Home Office and other local authorities.

In his statement to the House of Commons on Monday, 7 September, the Prime Minister announced that Britain should resettle up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the rest of the Parliament. The refugees would be taken from the camps in the countries neighbouring Syria. The Home Office and Department for Communities and Local Government are working with local authorities to put in place the arrangements to house and support the refugees.

It is too early to say what help Mansfield District Council could provide until further information is known about the number of families and individuals involved and to ensure the correct funding and support services are in place.

Executive Mayor of Mansfield, Kate Allsop, said: “We have all seen the terrible images on the television and I would welcome a proportionate number of families that are fleeing some of the most dreadful atrocities seen for a long time. Although it is too early to say exactly how the council will help, I would encourage all of Mansfield and district to welcome and help support any refugees, show compassion and help them to settle within our communities and enjoy the rich diversity they will bring.”

Cllr Barry Answer, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Mansfield District Council, said: “We are very keen to help those in greatest need who are fleeing violence. It is early days and there are still a lot of discussions to be had to ensure the correct support is there for any refugees we may help while also ensuring that we maintain the current high level of services locally.”
