Mansfield District Council, as corporate trustee of Berry Hill Park in the town, is to consider an application from Nottinghamshire Mining Museum for the erection of a monument commemorating the town’s mining history.
Nottinghamshire Mining Museum has submitted a request for approval in principle to erect the sculpture and a plaque at Berry Hill Park, close to an existing pit wheel in the area.
The Nottinghamshire Mining Museum plans to publicly consult on the proposal and will be fundraising to deliver the project.
If approved the memorial would coincide with the council’s improvement works as part of the Destination Parks project, funded by £2.94m of Towns Fund money.
The Destination Parks project would see new and improved accessible footpaths, a dedicated event space and a new building with a multi-functional space, café, toilets and changing rooms. Following a public consultation around potential enhancements, the project design will be confirmed, with a planning application due to be submitted in December.
The council became corporate trustees of the historical park in 2018.
