GROUPS from across Nottinghamshire are joining forces to promote the benefits of walking during National Get Walking Week, which runs from 2nd to 10th May.
Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire Area Ramblers are encouraging people of all ages and abilities to use the occasion to get out and explore their county on foot – and at the same time make new friends and benefit from a boost to health that walking can bring.
“Nottinghamshire has an excellent network of public rights of way, with more than 2,800 kilometres of footpaths, bridleways and byways to enjoy,” says Neil Lewis, the County Council’s team manager for countryside access.
“They criss-cross the county, from town centres to remote countryside and provide great opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy a walk, cycle or horse ride.
“Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier.
“It is underrated as a form of exercise but is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels who want to be more active and has been shown to reduce the chance of developing some chronic illnesses.”
Keith Wallace, of Nottinghamshire Area Ramblers, said: “Nottinghamshire is the perfect place for simply “going for a walk”. With no huge hills or barren moors, you can enjoy the countryside whatever your level of fitness.
“Thousands of people walk with hundreds of walking groups every week and Get Walking Week is the perfect time to join them.”
A timetable of suggested walks – most of which are free and led by experienced leaders – has been put together by the Ramblers and range from short and easy to longer outings for the keener walker.
A launch event is being held at Teversal Visitor Centre on Saturday 2nd May from 11am when there will be a choice of short walks around Silverhill Wood.
