Cooking up cash for community causes

The latest £2,000 winners from the Robin Hood Lottery have been revealed.

They are Mrs N, of Skegby, who has chosen to remain anonymous and Candice Dean (34), of Mapperley Park.

The lottery, which is run by Mansfield District Council, sees 50% of the £1 ticket cost go to a player’s chosen charity or good cause and a further 10% go to other good causes in the Mansfield area. `players who match all six numbers win a £25,000 jackpot.

Candice, whose parents live in Mansfield, has supported Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in the past and is now raising money for Home-Start Mansfield.

She said: “I’ve played since it launched because it seemed like a good way to help local good causes. I chose numbers based on my daughter, Margot’s, due date. After she was born earlier than expected I was tempted to change the numbers to her actual birthday – but I’m glad I didn’t!

“When I got the email to say I’d won, I was expecting to have won some extra tickets rather than money. When I saw it said £2,000 I thought it wasn’t real so I checked on the Robin Hood Lottery website and was thrilled to confirm it wasn’t a scam.

“The win came at a really good time for us. We were moving house and talking about whether we should buy a posh new oven so we treated ourselves to one with our winnings.

“Playing is low cost and as you pay by direct debit it’s really easy to play. Your chances of winning are higher than in other lotteries and this is a good way to put money into your local area.”

Since the lottery started in February 2018, £23,000 has been paid out in winnings. At the same time, it’s raised more than £80,000 for good causes.

The Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, said: “Congratulations not only to Candice’s family and all our cash prize winners but also to the local good causes that benefit through the sale of lottery tickets.

“Mansfield has such high levels of community spirit and residents have a keen desire to help others. Our lottery is such an easy way for the public to support local charities, groups and organisations while being in with a chance of winning a fantastic prize for themselves.”
