Community funding cash is up for grabs

Posted onPosted on 12th Oct

AN initiative that helps local people to develop projects to boost their communities is on course to complete 25 schemes this financial year.

Now applications are being invited for communities wanting help with projects during the 2016/17 financial year.

Launched in 2013, the Supporting Local Communities (SLC) fund helps residents deliver schemes that offer environmental, economic and community benefits to their local areas.

The SLC fund has £500,000 at its disposal and supports a wide range of community-based schemes, from the renovation of local historic buildings to new play areas. Successful applicants could receive as much as £50,000.

Schemes already completed or due to be completed this year include the regeneration of the outdoor market in Sutton and the creation of a community gardening plot and training area in Mansfield Woodhouse.

The SLC fund is also supporting the refurbishment of first world war memorials by matching funding raised locally.

This year a portion of the fund is to be put aside for the installation of gateway signs on main roads into villages and small towns in the county following requests in previous years.

The fund has been refocused to target money at areas of deprivation. Schemes will be prioritised if they meet certain criteria, including attracting match-funding, environmental/quality of life improvements, encouraging volunteering, supporting economic viability and community ownership.
