Two successful community champions in Mansfield have received a special thank-you from the town’s mayor.
Paralympian Charlotte Henshaw and the Seaforth Highlanders Notts Pipes and Drums band were presented with Mayor’s Special Commendation certificates and commemorative silver plaques by Andy Abrahams
The mayor hosted the commendation evening, before a meeting of the full council at the Civic Centre to recognise their success in Mansfield and beyond.
Seaforth Highlanders Notts is celebrating 50 years of leading Mansfield District Council’s remembrance parade this year, while Charlotte has competed in five Paralympics as a swimmer and canoeist, winning gold medals, and is a world champion.
Andy said: “I wanted to say a personal thank-you to both Charlotte and the Seaforth Highlanders, who have been putting Mansfield on the map and bringing success to our district for many years.
“It was an opportunity to recognise their success, their passion for the district, and their hopes and plans to inspire the next generation to get involved in sport or music.
“Our community champions are what make Mansfield the place it is today, and we continue to hope and watch out for their continued success in the future.”
Charlotte, who won two paracanoe gold medals at the Paris Paralympics last year, began her sporting career swimming in Mansfield with former council swimming coach Glenn Smith, who also trained Ollie Hynd and Rebecca Adlington.
She competed in swimming at her first three Paralympic games, including winning silver in London in 2012.
The distinctive bagpipe sounds of Seaforth Highlanders Notts are familiar to Mansfield residents. Some of the band members have been together for decades, and membership continues to grow.
