Charity trek to help homeless

A charity working with homeless people across the East Midlands is holding a 22-mile fundraising trek in the Peak District to help vulnerable and excluded people enjoy the great outdoors.

Framework, which works with more than 11,000 people a year, will be hosting its second annual trek challenge on Saturday, September 12. The event, sponsored by Western Power Distribution, will see dozens of walkers take on a gruelling 22-mile circuit around the National Park in aid of Framework’s Nature in Mind service – a highly successful initiative aimed at widening access to outdoor activities and recreation for vulnerable people in Nottinghamshire.

Beginning and ending at the Hope Sports Club, the route will follow the well-trodden Edale Skyline, taking in the stunning vistas of Win Hill Pike, Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and Lose Hill. Walkers will be lead on the day and in the run up to the challenge by an experienced local guide. There is a limit on walker numbers and places are filling fast.

Event organiser Sarah Cross, Framework’s Fundraising Officer; said – “People do all sorts of things to raise money for us, but this is definitely the most spectacular and scenic challenge in our fundraising calendar. It offers a chance for experienced walkers to enjoy a spectacular and organised day out, and for beginners to sample some truly inspiring scenery in the company of an experienced local guide.

“More significantly they are helping vulnerable and excluded people – people with mental health challenges and a history of homelessness – experience nature. We know from experience that this kind of activity can play a huge role in helping people to recover from the troubles of their past. I would also like to thank our sponsors at Western Power Distribution, who have ensured that every penny raised on the day will go towards this work.”

Cotswolds Outdoors are also supporting the event by providing logistical help on the day and offering a store discount to participants.

Michael Clarke, of Western Power Distribution, added: “We are once again delighted to continue our relationship with Framework and indeed sponsor TREK for the first time.

“With many of our staff working and living in and around Nottinghamshire and Mansfield, we are keen to have strong links with the communities and local charities, and we are pleased to offer our support to Framework for this event.

“Some of our own employees are taking part and looking forward to the TREK challenge, as well as raising some of their own money for the cause.”

TREK, which will take place between 6am and 6pm, is a team event for groups of between four and eight people. A registration fee of £50 is requested to ensure a safe and memorable event. Entrants will get a qualified walk leader, first aiders, check point snacks, a commemorative T-shirt and pre-walk training.
