Severn Trent’s £76m project moving ahead

Posted onPosted on 7th Dec

Since 2022, Severn Trent has been working in Mansfield to turn the town into a sustainable flood resilient community.

The project, the biggest of its kind in the UK, has seen Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) installed.

They are designed to help sewer networks cope better during bad weather by storing rainwater in the ground for days after a severe event.

More than 200 SuDS — equating to over 16 million litres of extra rainwater storage capacity — have been installed, together with more than 2,600m³ of permeable paving, which are parking spaces that also work to collect and store rainwater.

Severn Trent is aiming to establish 30 million litres-plus of SuDS storage across Mansfield, which it said would reduce a flooding risk for around 90,000 people. The project has also led to the creation of lmost 400 jobs.

The company’s Adam Boucher, operations lead, said: “We’re well on the way to delivering this massive piece of work in Mansfield, and we’ve already seen people benefitting from some of the SuDS we’ve installed already.

“We know that more work is needed to be done, but we’re hopeful that we’ll continue to progress in the coming months and more people will start to see the benefits of the project.”
