Brave teen wins MP’s accolade

Posted onPosted on 9th Nov

The story of an inspirational 14-year-old Sutton boy has inspired Ashfield MP Lee Anderson to launch a resident of the month competition.

Lee had originally asked constituents to put forward young people who had gone above and beyond during the pandemic for the chance to go on a free trip to Go Ape at Sherwood Pines.

But when the MP heard about Jak Marshall, 14, from his teacher at Sutton Community Academy, he wanted to do more — and has now started the monthly award, with Jak the first winner.

Jak had been at home with his father and younger siblings, while his mother was very ill in hospital, when tragedy struck,

Jak’s father suffered a heart attack, meaning the teenager had to call 999 and give his dad CPR, while taking instructions from the emergency services.

An air ambulance then took Jak’s father to hospital, leaving Jak to look after his brothers and sister.

Heartbreakingly, Jak’s father died a week later, devastating the family.

“Jak is one of the most amazing young people I have ever met,” said Lee.

“I met him with his mum and his siblings to tell them I am incredibly proud of Jak.

“It didn’t seem enough to just invite him to Go Ape — I wanted to do more. Ashfield has some amazing people, so I decided to launch a resident of the month competition, with Jak being the first winner.”
