Barclays Bank staff in Mansfield joined colleagues from across the region in a co-ordinated fundraising effort to help fund an operation for a two-year boy with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy.
The Mansfield staff wanted to cycle 40 miles on a static bike in support of others riding from Nottingham to Sheffield. By the end of the day, the Mansfield team had more than trebled their target, cycling more than 120 miles.
Camellia Rooney, a Barclays Essential Banker, who organised the Mansfield fundraising for the Rotherham youngster, said: “Our customers really got behind us and our fundraising efforts. Some even cheered staff on as they cycled. We’re hoping to raise around £150 in total, which Barclays will double through a staff fund-raising scheme. We pleased to have been able to play our part to support such a good cause.”
Joan, a Barlcays customer from Warsop, said: “It’s wonderful to see the bank doing their bit to help make things better for this little boy. They are always so friendly and helpful and what there are doing is fabulous.”
Cheryl Carr, Oli’s mum, who works for the bank, said she has been overwhelmed by the support of her colleagues and the generosity of the public. “Oli’s condition means his increased muscle tone make his legs and feet constantly stiff. He struggles to sit and crawl and is unable to walk or stand unaided,” she said.
“There isn’t a cure for cerebral palsy, but we’re raising money towards a life-changing operation and therapy that could significantly reduce the amount of stiffness and help Oli to walk.”
