Backing fight against polio

Representatives of Kirkby Rotary Club, a school from the town and Ashfield District Council viewed a floral result of their combined efforts.

Last October, 25 pupils from year six of Kingsway Primary School planted thousands of crocus bulbs in flower beds at Shoulder of Mutton Hill, laid out in the shape of the Rotary wheel emblem.

The school was one of three that took part in the plantings there and in Kingsway Park.

The council supplied 4,000 bulbs and its staff prepared the beds.

It was part of Kirkby’s End Polio Week, an initiative between the Rotary Club and the council.

The aim was to raise awareness of Rotary International’s ongoing programme to help the World Health Organisation fight the disease.

The sale of purple crocus badges, the polio eradication symbol, raised £1,500. That was boosted to £3,600 by a donation from the Gates Foundation.

Pictured are Kingsway pupils visiting the site with Coun Chris Baron and Rotarian Roger Pursey, president of the Rotary club.

Mr Pursey said: “We are grateful for the support of the council, schools, churches and many individuals in and around Kirkby who took part.”
