Awards hope for council

Mansfield District Council has reached the final in four categories of this year’s East Midlands Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards.

The council has been shortlisted for best new small housing development; best social or affordable new housing development for its Bonington Road homes; best high volume new housing development and best social or affordable new housing development for its Flint Avenue bungalows for older people.

The £350,000 Bonington Road development comprised two bungalows designed to support the needs of people with disabilities. They included a kitchen with a sink and hob that can be adjusted to a person’s height, and a spacious wet room with hand rails.

The £2.9m Flint Avenue development (pictured) for older people comprised 17 bungalows. Four are specifically designed for people in wheelchairs and all have level access wet rooms.

All of the bungalows at both schemes are spacious to allow people in wheelchairs to easily move about their homes.
Mansfield District Council’s director of communities, Hayley Barsby, said: “The council previously won an excellence award in 2012 for its development of family housing at Bellamy Road.

“The competition for the awards is always strong so to be a finalist again with our two latest developments is a great accomplishment for the council and a reflection of the high-quality housing that the authority is building.”

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony on 10th June.
