The Rotary Club of Warsop, Shirebrook and District presented its Citizen of the Year award to street cleaner Barry Snowdon.
Mr Snowdon, who with his wife, Julie, was a guest at the group’s monthly meeting at the Hostess Restaurant, Sookholme, has detained a handbag thief while at work and also risked his life to put out a fire in a lorry filled with gas bottles.
He has also received many awards for going beyond the call of duty.
President Steve Lunn said: “He has been described as a superhero who just loves his job. He is an extremely popular person in the Warsop area and we are proud to give this award to him.”
Headmaster Gary Dodds, who teaches at St Martin’s School, Derby, gave a talk on Global Education in the School Curriculum.
In the past, he has organised expeditions to the South Pole, where he placed the club’s flag.
Mr Lunn congratulated president-elect Ted Smith, Marin Humphries and junior vice-president Tim Bower on behalf of the club for cleaning Warsop Parish Centre.
