Ashfield came together to help Afghan refugees

Posted onPosted on 26th Nov

When Inner Wheel Club of Kirkby members heard about the plight of Afghan refugees arriving in the UK with nothing, they decided to help.

The members, upset to learn that one woman had got off the plane without even owning a pair of shoes, decided to gather together clothing, bedding and household goods.

Many of the refugees are housed in hotels in Derby until they can be resettled in different parts of the country. They need anything that can help them set up homes.

Ann Wilson, a long-time member of Kirkby Inner Wheel, approached Label Traders, of Sutton, and was delighted to receive a donation of new clothing, bedding and household goods.

Club members sorted through their wardrobes and cupboards to see what they could spare and more than 80 boxes of crockery and clothing were collected and delivered to a collection point in Heanor. Prior to that two car-loads had already been donated and more will be collected in the New Year.

Deliveries were made by the Inner Wheel’s Ann Wilson, Barbara Williams, Jean Toseland and Sally Hill.
