Appeals to help Ukraine refugees

Posted onPosted on 3rd Mar

Mansfield woman Bugosia Kavanagh has launched an appeal for goods and food to help Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing their country to Poland.

She said: “My hometown is just 40 miles away from the border and Polish people there are welcoming Ukrainian refugees.

“I’m organising a collection of essentials,  mainly for women and children, such as towels, blankets, baby food, nappies, clothing, sanitary towels, and small soft toys.”

Beds, medicines and other items are also welcome. Items can be left at the Intake Business Centre, Mansfield, and will be taken to Poland by Huthwaite haulier Mark Taylor, who volunteered to make the journey across Europe for free.

Mark is a champion truck racer in the British Truck Racing Championship and his father, Alan, is managing director of Taylor’s Transport, Huthwaite.
The lorry is expected to leave on Sunday so items must be donated as soon as possible. Ashfield Fire Station is also colleting donated goods for the appeal up to 3pm on Saturday.

Collections are taking place at the Old Meeting House, Mansfield, click here for more details. Among the items they are requesting are first aid supplies, protein bars and small packets of nut and raisins, crunchy peanut butter in plastic containers, instant soup mixes, toiletries, warm socks, fingerless mittens, thick tights (large) and nappies and baby food.

Pupils at All Saints’ Catholic Academy in Mansfield are also collecting donations for refugees. The school is asking for medical supplies, baby milk and bottles, sterilising tablets, nappies and baby wipes, sanitary products, hats, scarves and gloves, tents, back packs, sleeping bags, pillows and bedding, torches, candles and matches.

Nexus on Church Street, Mansfield, is accepting donations between 8.30am and 5pm this week. Clothing, non-perishable foods and first aid supplies are needed.
Ruby’s News, Clipstone, on Mansfield Road, is welcoming donations and help with taking them to Tuxford on Friday, where they will be loaded onto lorries. Contact Ruby’s News on 01623 624350 if you can help.
The Court House pub in Mansfield is taking donations of toiletries and tinned food.
