Amazon Sutton supports children fighting cancer

Posted onPosted on 29th Oct

The Amazon team at its fulfilment centre in Sutton made a £1,000 donation to the children’s cancer ward at Nottingham Children’s Hospital as part of the company’s global Amazon Goes Gold campaign during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Now in its fifth year, Amazon Goes Gold is a global initiative to highlight, support and amplify the work done by many organisations to increase survival rates through lifesaving treatments and research.

This year’s charity partners included the Starlight Foundation, Together for Short Lives, and the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

Amazon Sutton staff made their £1,000 donation to the children’s cancer ward at Nottingham City Hospital. Nottingham Hospitals Charity, which supports the Children’s Hospital, plans to use the money to provide play equipment, such as toys, arts and craft materials and technology, to help bring a smile to children’s faces during their time in hospital.

Amazon Goes Gold saw the team at Amazon in Sutton hold a month-long series of gold-themed events. The gold theme is in recognition of the international colour for childhood cancer.

One of the events this year was a 48-hour PJammin’ party, where staff at Amazon Sutton joined colleagues across the UK by wearing pyjamas to work in honour of children who spend every day in their PJs during treatment.

Amazon Sutton general manager Georgia Akuwudike said: “It’s fantastic to support the children’s cancer ward at Nottingham Children’s Hospital as part of this year’s Amazon Goes Gold campaign and we hope the donation provides a boost to the staff and volunteers who do so much for the children in our community.”

One of the Amazon employees at the fulfilment centre who took part in Amazon Goes Gold, Sarah Osborne, added: “It’s great that Amazon continues to support childhood cancer organisations both here in Sutton and around the world. I loved taking part in the activities at our site and I’m glad we are able to make this donation to such a brilliant charity in our community.”

Louise Knight, head of fundraising at Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: “We are so grateful to all the staff at Amazon who helped raise money for the children’s cancer ward at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. No child wants to be in hospital, but with this donation we can make their stay a little better and brighter. Thank you so much to everyone who took part in the fundraising events.”
