Mansfield Museum’s 113-year history is being showcased in a new venture.
Mansfield Museum In 389¼ Objects, an attempt to convey the range of its diverse holdings in a single gallery, is its first 12-month temporary exhibition.
For more than a century the museum has collected objects connected in some way to the town it serves. During that time the museum’s image has been totally transformed, from a fusty Edwardian temple of learning to a place so attractive to children and parents alike that it recently won the UK Family-Friendly Museum award.
Jodie Henshaw, museum development officer, said: “There are those who hanker after the displays of stuffed tropical birds or curiosities like the elephant’s foot umbrella stand.
“To indulge those older visitors and, in doing so, allow younger visitors to catch a glimpse of the museum as it once was, we have launched Mansfield Museum In Objects.”
Special events linked to the exhibition will include an Edwardian dress-up and a typewriter bash.
If your fondly-remembered item isn’t on show, you can enter the object of the month scheme to try to get it featured, like the teasmaid (pictured).
The museum, on Leeming Street, is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Admission is free. Go to www.mansfield.gov.uk/museum or call 01623 463088 for details.
