An ambassador for Reach Learning Disability will participate in the first Reach Mansfield 10K, on Sunday, 23rd August, in honour of his brother who lives with Down Syndrome.
After graduation, 25-year-old Tom Fisk (pictured, left, with his brother, Ben) began working for Reach Learning Disability, providing bespoke person-centred support for adults with learning disabilities. The Nottinghamshire based charity has been a huge support for Tom’s family, and his brother Ben, aged 31, who lives with Down Syndrome.
Tom said: “My older brother, Ben, has received support from Reach Learning Disability for many years. From home experience and from working with the charity I know how much their efforts mean to the many adults living with disabilities and their families.
“I haven’t participated in any long distance runs since my school days so running 10K will be a challenge, but knowing that I will be supporting such a worthy cause will make it worthwhile.”
Steve Shatwell, CEO Reach Learning Disability, and Event Manager for Reach Mansfield 10K, said: “Tom is an asset to the charity and we’re delighted that he will be participating in the very first Mansfield 10K in support of Reach Learning Disability.
“Tom and his brother, Ben, are very close and this has no doubt inspired him to pursue this career and partake in the 10K. The charity has supported Ben and the family for some time and during this time I have seen Tom develop into a notable young man and a plausible ambassador for our charity.”
Since the closure of the Mansfield Half Marathon in 2011, the organisers have been working to bring a brand new running event to Mansfield. Hundreds are expected to participate in the 10K race which aims to regenerate interest in the town centre and promote healthy living and wellbeing.
The race route, which consists of two 5k circuits of the historic town centre, starting at Titchfield Park at 9.30am, has also been chosen as the Notts AAA County Championships race for 2015.
