National award for Woodhouse school

A Mansfield Woodhouse school will receive an accolade at the annual Reading Recovery Awards in London at the end of June for improving reading and writing skills.

The awards celebrated schools and teachers who made an outstanding contribution to children’s literacy through Reading Recovery.

Picking up awards in the Reading Recovery children’s competition will be Northfield Primary and Nursery pupils Gerrard Colmer and Kloe Chapman-Moxon, both aged six.

Head Julie Jenkins said: “We are delighted with Gerrard and Kloe’s achievements.

“It is a great recognition of the hard work and dedication of the school’s outstanding Reading Recovery teacher Dawn Beaumont, who is ably supported by all parents.”

The competition was to do a short piece of writing and a picture to show thoughts about reading.
Jose Coles, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Reading Recovery teacher leader, has trained more than 100 Reading Recovery teachers to work as literacy experts.

“The schools have committed to ensuring that every child in their school becomes an effective reader and writer so that they have the life chances they deserve,” she said.

Julia Douetil, head of the International Literacy Centre, said reading was an essential skill.
