Kirkby Rotary Club has backed a campaign for a national charity dedicated to reducing the frequency of sudden cardiac death in young people.

Suzanne Morton, of Kirkby, pictured, spoke about Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) at a meeting of the club.

She has been fundraising for the charity since the sudden death of her son, Luke, aged 20. in 2013.

“CRY is now the leading screening organisation in the UK”, she said. “My next target is to raise £3,500 for screening to be done locally.”

The Rotary club is staging a fundraising concert in aid of CRY at St Wilfrid’s Church, Kirkby, on Saturday, 20th June, at 7.15pm. The event, Midsummer Melodies, will feature Newstead Brass and Ashfield Workplace Choir.

Organiser Rotarian Philip Hurt commented: ”We are fortunate to have two quality and entertaining groups. The band continues to be one of the best Championship Section bands in the Midlands, and the choir entered a competition in Nottingham last year, just for the experience, and won it.

“As a bonus we are pleased to have soprano Samantha Vernon to sing for us. She is ex-Cantamus, and is currently studying for her Masters at the Birmingham Conservatoire.”
