Students at Samworth Church Academy, Mansfield, took part in a Christian Ethos week, exploring themes that surround Christianity.

They participated in drama workshops and discussion groups with Roughshod, a touring group from Riding Lights Theatre Company.

The week culminated with a performance of ‘Incredible’.

Brooke Clements, from year 9, said: “The performers were moving.”

Abbey Sharp, also from year 9, said they attended the performance because the group was so interesting during the lessons. She said: “They are good performers.”

Mr Paul Birch, associate director for the theatre company, said the method of lesson delivery was designed to provoke strong dialogue between the actors and students.

“We have taken our guerrilla-style performances into prisons, care homes, military bases, coffee shops, back gardens, churches, and, of course, schools.

“We hope to use drama to stimulate students’ thinking about the Christian faith and social justice issues in a very immediate way.”

Teacher Mr James Fenby said the week had been a great success and set students thinking about faith in today’s world.

Sally Chadwick, of year 10 said: “The group were amazing. In the drama class I got a chance to speak to them about how they came to be doing what they do; they have inspired me to go further in drama.”

Hannah Blofield, an actor in the group, said she the week had been a success.

“We felt the show was well received and got brilliant feedback from the students. It was lovely for us to be based in the Academy for a week so our faces could become a little more familiar with the students, allowing them to feel comfortable to talk to us. We had a great week and hope the students enjoyed it as much as we did.”
