Students are sew caring!

Kind-hearted students from Quarrydale Academy, Sutton, have been thanked for a donation to King’s Mill Hospital in the town.

The young people visited the Amazon Breast Unit at King’s Mill to hand over mastectomy bags — which are worn over the shoulder to carry surgical drains following an operation — and heart-shaped cushions to make patients more comfortable.

The items, made during textiles classes at the academy, will give a personal touch to those attending the unit.

Joy Wilson, community involvement co-ordinator at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “It is personal items such as this that make all the difference to our patients.

“Thank you to the students and staff at Quarrydale Academy, who made the effort to donate these items.”

Clare Harrison, head of Food and Textiles at the academy, introduced the project to her year 8 and year 9 students to make textiles seem more interesting.

She said creating items that are useful and provide a real-life benefit to someone has really helped the students to feel engaged with the project.
