Children attending a school holiday activity day at a Mansfield leisure centre had a surprise meeting with a sporting superstar.
Two-time Paralympic gold medallist Charlotte Henshaw, who sometimes trains at Oak Tree Leisure Centre’s gym, took her canoeing medals to show the youngsters, who had been participating in wheelchair sports.
The Mansfield star explained her sport of canoeing, talking about her Paris Paralympic Games success last summer.
The children were able to talk to Charlotte, asking questions and learning more about her career, as well as taking photos with the Paralympian and her gold medals.
Carolyn Hallam, health and wellbeing manager for More Leisure Community Trust, which manages the centre, said: “It was an absolute treat for both the children and staff to spend time with Charlotte, hear her story, and learn more about her career.
“The children were thrilled to meet such an inspirational role model and loved seeing her gold medals.
“I would like to thank Charlotte for taking time away from her training schedule, and Nottinghamshire County Council for funding this session.”
The week-long holiday scheme at the centre enabled youngsters to take part in activities and enjoy free meals.
