Mansfield remembers its fallen

Posted onPosted on 5th Nov

Mansfield District Council will host its annual parade to mark Remembrance Sunday on 10th November.

The commemoration will begin at the Civic Centre War Memorial at 10am with a wreath-laying ceremony, with civic dignitaries including mayor Andy Abrahams, Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Col Nicholas Hile, and Mansfield MP Steve Yemm.

Joining them will be Mansfield District Council chief executive Adam Hill, councillors, Royal British Legion representatives, Army Reservists, cadet units, ex-service associations, and voluntary organisations.

The parade will start at about 10.15am from the Civic Centre, heading to St Peter and St Paul’s Church along Rosemary Street, Westfield Lane, West Gate and Market Place and Church Street. The Pipes and Drums of The Seaforth Highlanders Association will provide the marching music. Road closures will be in place at this time.

The service, which is for parade participants, will start at about 10.40am and include a two-minute silence at 11am.

After the service, the parade will regroup and make its way back along Church Street to the Market Place for a salute in front of the Old Town Hall at noon as a final mark of respect. There will also be a performance by Kirkby Chorus Choir.

The council’s knitted poppy netting is now being displayed on the Old Town Hall, and lamp post poppies and silhouette soldiers have been installed around the district.

Andy said: “I am delighted that Mansfield District Council is continuing to host the Remembrance Sunday parade as a key event in its calendar.

“It remains important that this community and civic act of homage to all servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice during the two world wars and subsequent conflicts is respected and unites us all annually in remembrance.

“Everyone is welcome to come and pay their respects to those who lost their lives.”

Those unable to attend in person will be able to watch the wreath-laying service, parade, and two-minute silence live on the council’s Facebook page.

Members of the public are also welcome to join the council’s commemoration of Armistice Day on Monday, 11th November at the war memorial in Carr Bank Park, Mansfield. There will be a short service, led by the Rev Dr Caroline Phillips, vicar of St Peter and Paul’s Church, and a wreath-laying ceremony, ahead of a two-minute silence at 11am.
