Ompton figure skating star Meg McFarlane has been nominated for Regional Champion of the Year (East) at Everyone Active’s Sporting
Champions Awards, which will be held at Porchester Hall in Bayswater, London, on Wednesday, 3th October.
Everyone Active runs more than 230 leisure and cultural centres across the country, including Sutton’s Lammas Leisure Centre and Kirkby Leisure Centre, in partnership with Ashfield District Council.
The company’s Sporting Champions scheme is a sports talent development programme that supports 1,400 athletes.
Meg trains at Lammas Leisure Centre’s ice rink and won gold and bronze at the Special Olympics National Winter Games in Folgaria, Italy in February. The 21-year-old was joined for the competition by Louisa Chatwin (pictured with Meg), a coach at Lammas Leisure Centre, who also served as head coach for Special Olympics GB in Italy.
Lorenzo Clark, Everyone Active contract manager, said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating the fantastic achievements of all the Sporting Champions athletes at Porchester Hall, including Meg and Felicia.
“The scheme has been very successful in providing exceptional support to emerging talent and we are delighted to be showcasing this.
“As a leisure provider working in partnership with Ashfield District Council, we feel it is important to cater for all sections of the community, and we hope to continue making a real difference to our athletes’ success.”
Coun Jason Zadrozny, leader of the council, added: “It is fantastic that our leisure centres in Ashfield are helping to shape sporting stars of the
future. The Sporting Champions scheme is a brilliant opportunity for athletes to help them reach their full potential – something we are proud to offer here.
“We have invested £22.5m in upgrading our leisure centres to offer some of the best facilities across the entire region and I would encourage anyone thinking about joining to find out more about what we have to offer.”
