Business students at West Nottinghamshire College brought glitter and applause to the stage at their end-of-year celebrations, with awards in 16 categories.

The event, opened by principal and chief executive Andrew Cropley, was attended by family, friends, and teachers.

It was organised entirely by students as part of their event management business unit.

They prepared and organised everything, including invitations, catering, decorations, script-writing, making certificates, and a large screen presentation.

Student Cameron Ashall-Smith was master of ceremonies for the evening with teachers and the head of business department, Hayley Wood, presenting awards, which included Best Attitude To Learning, Most Likely To Be On The Apprentice, Best With Technology, and Best Attitude To Learning.

The Special Student Award: Never Giving Up went to Intermediate Certificate in Business student Bobbie Dean, who improved her exam grade by two grades in a resit.

The Top Student Award was presented to Sorina Milos, a learner on the Advanced Foundation Diploma in Business.

Teachers commented on her willingness to take on responsibility and lead others, as well as her polite and respectful manner, and the likelihood of her becoming a future leader.

Sorina has taken on a key role in the Eventors learning company and is leading on the Great Vision Awards, which will take place at the end of the academic year.

Ammarah Miah, who was team leader for the organisation of the celebration event, also scooped the Above And Beyond Award.

“We had to cope with some last-minute changes in terms of the rooming and fluctuating numbers of guests, but we faced the challenges well, while still keeping up with our classwork,” he said.

Department head Hayley Wood added: “What makes this even more special is that the event is organised by our students and showcases the talents of these young people.”
