Thirty-five performing arts students from Razzamataz Mansfield and Nottingham were given the chance to appear on a West End stage.

They were among young people from 13 Razzamataz schools who had a full-day’s insight into the professional world of performing arts before taking to the stage at the iconic Shaftesbury Theatre for The Next Step.

The gala performance — hosted by Matt Pagan, a member of Britain’s Got Talent-winning group Collabro — allowed the students to showcase their skills across dance, drama, and singing as well as discovering more about their potential in the industry.

Professional artists led masterclasses during the day and talent agents and performing arts colleges — including Arts Educational School, London; Emil Dale Academy, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Mountview drama school, London; and Laine Theatre Arts, Surrey — also attended.

Workshops offered insights into the realities of a performer’s life, guidance for college auditions, and a deeper insight into what students’ next steps could be.

Claire Blower, principal of Razzamataz Mansfield and Nottingham, said: “I am proud of all the students and my team of teachers for their commitment to making our performance in The Next Step show so amazing.

“We had two casts and they both gave a fantastic performance, making us very proud. We are committed to providing our students with experiences that go beyond the ordinary — for those who want to take their performing aspirations through to a career and for others who want exceptional opportunities that will build their confidence to feed through to other areas of their lives.”

Georgia Morgan, who appeared in Moulin Rouge in the West End and Australia; actor and vocal coach Adam Pettigrew, who has played many stage roles including Boq in Wicked (West End) and Princeton / Rod in Avenue Q (UK tour); West End star and college tutor Laurie Scarth; and casting director Felicity French from theatre company Cameron Mackintosh were among those giving insights to the students.

“This was a spectacular showcase of young talent from across the UK,” said Felicity. “There were some seriously impressive performances and every single student looked like they were having the time of their lives performing on a West End stage.”
