Animal crackers at school

Flying High Academy pupils in Mansfield got to grips with veterinary skills thanks to a visit by Park Hall Veterinary Clinic, Mansfield Woodhouse, and their headteacher’s Great Dane, called William.

Veterinary surgeon Sally Litchfield and veterinary nurse Sally Winstone also used a Pug called Winnie to show children how to listen to a dog’s heartbeat.

Sally talked about how to care for animals, be safe around them and what a day in the life of a vet is like.
William, owned by Tony Warsop, is one year old, weighs 13 stones, and towers above children at the primary school.

Sally Litchfield, veterinary surgeon at Park Hall Vets said: “It was good for Sarah and myself to take a bit of time and talk to the children about how we care for their pets and what being a veterinary nurse involves. I think the children enjoyed listening to the dogs’ hearts with the stethoscopes and they seemed very enthusiastic to meet William and Winnie.

“At Park Hall Veterinary Clinic we endeavour to do our best for the animals in our care and it would be nice to think we may have inspired a budding vet or vet nurse of the future!”
