Thingymabobas – a bizarre and interactive experience

Posted onPosted on 24th Aug

Makers of Imaginary Worlds is presenting Thingymabobas at Mansfield Museum, until Saturday 9 September.

This playful, sensory experience allows visitors to meet and interact with a circus troupe of performing mechanical structures for an ‘animatronic and robotic circus’ of bizarrely wonderful machines created to inspire, delight and intrigue.

The work combines robotics, found objects, sensing technology, and circus performers such as acrobats, trapeze artists, tightrope walkers, jugglers, and unicyclists. It draws inspiration from the absurd contraptions of Heath Robinson and Rowland Emett, and Calder’s Circus.

A team of artists and creative technologists crafted five sculptures from various traditional materials, children’s toys, and repurposed objects in innovative ways. The result is a set of eye-catching artworks that ignite curiosity in audiences, young and old.

Arts Council funding has allowed Mansfield District Council’s Cultural Services team to bring this innovative and interactive new touring exhibition for free. The museum is open from 10am to 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday each week.
