A grade II listed mill in Sutton is being refurbished by Ashfield District Council.

Lindley’s Windmill, on Prospect Place, Sutton, is Ashfield’s last remaining mill out of the nine that were built across the town.

It dates to 1823 and was in operation as a flour mill until 1895.

The council is replacing a flat roof with a conical roof to help prevent water damage, replacing the floor inside the mill, and cleaning the building to ensure the hidden gem can be preserved for years to come.

The works are set to be completed by September and will be marked with an official opening date.

There will also be opportunities for residents to visit the mill following the reopening. Sutton Heritage Society has previously run appointment-only visits to the mill.

Coun Chris Huskinson, executive lead for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said: “We are very fortunate to have such an interesting historical building in Ashfield and we are proud to preserve it for future generations.

“We have only a couple of listed buildings left in the district, so it’s important that we maintain them to keep our history alive.”
