The former power house at Clipstone Colliery will be the unlikely venue for two special concerts in August.

Pianist and classical composer Chris Miggells is to launch his debut album, Synesthese, at the old pit with the two concerts.

He said the acoustics in the 50-foot high, cathedral-size powerhouse at the iconic Clipstone headstocks were truly phenomenal.

The concerts, the first at the site, will include the chance to go on a guided tour of the old colliery before the music.

The idea for the events came after Chris, of Boughton, filmed a live music video for his single, Stone Giant, inside the powerhouse. His album is full of original compositions.

A feature on Chris’s YouTube channel showed a £100,000 Steinway grand piano being raised up into the powerhouse on an original hand-pulled mining crane for the video.

That proved to be a hit and interest in the first concert was so big that Chris added a second date. The first concert on Thursday, 3rd August, is sold out, but tickets are available for the second date on the following day, Friday, 4th August, at 7pm.

Each concert will have a capacity of 120.

The concerts are the latest events to be held at the site, where owner Stuart Mills, director of Mansfield-based Adco Properties, wants to create a leisure venue.

Chris said: “This is an unmissable music event, which promises a live experience like no other. This is a chance to be part of history in the making as the remarkable feat of a piano concert at this extraordinary place has never been accomplished before and may never be seen again.

The unique concerts will be extra special for Chris because his grandfather, Robert Miggells, was a miner.

He said his love for music began as a student at The Dukeries Academy, Ollerton.

“My influences? It’s life experiences, which make such an impact on my mind that I feel completely consumed until I transcribe them into music,” Chris added.

“The inspiration for this album comes from many sights seen while travelling the world. I am inspired by the Mansfield area too.

“I look at things and hear an internal soundtrack. For example, a visit to the Grand Canyon inspired Stone Giant.

“Another track, Aurora, is the translation of my experience observing the Northern Lights in Iceland.”

Synesthese is taken from the term synesthesia, a neurological condition for experiencing one of your senses through another, such as seeing colours when hearing music.

Chris has also worked with Mansfield piano store Sherwood Phoenix on the project.
